Art in the Service of Conservation

October 27, 2023 - January 12, 2024

The Natural History Institute Gallery presents
Art in the Service of Conservation
Walt Anderson
October 27th, 2023 – January 12th, 2023

Biophilia means love of life, an inherent affiliation with the natural world in which our species evolved. Modern humans have often moved away from our natural connections, but most of us still respond to the beauty of nature when we see it. My art is intended to create feelings of affiliation with animals, plants, and ecosystems. By conveying fidelity to the spirit and natural history of wildlife, I want to inspire and motivate people to engage (or re-engage) personally in conservation to protect the life with which we share this remarkable planet. This exhibition is about love of life as expressed through an artist’s eye.

Appreciation of nature should not be a selfish act, an amusement or comfort-giving activity to make us feel good. Humans are having enormous negative impacts on ecosystems and wildlife; we are damaging Mother Earth and all the millions of organisms that share this planet with us. It is our responsibility as citizens of this planet to reverse the harm, to show our love and appreciation for the more-than-human world. Conservation is really a matter of self-preservation. Wildlife art can contribute to that, and my projects provide good examples of how a person can make a difference, both locally and globally. Some of the artworks will have commissions committed to the organizations I support, in addition to the Natural History Institute.
