Red Rock Country Uncovered: Exploring Sedona’s Red Rock State Park

In this field excursion, we will explore the geology and ecology of Red Rock State Park in Sedona.
Did you know that Sedona was once coastal property when Earth’s continents formed the supercontinent Pangaea? Step back in time to 280 million years ago and explore the breathtaking Red Rock State Park, where ancient geological stories come to life. As you visit this awe-inspiring park, you’ll discover a rich history of ancestral mountain deposits, an ancient sea, and coastal dunes, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Mogollon Rim. Over millions of years, erosion has carved away more than four miles of rock, leaving behind the iconic red rock formations that define Sedona today. Don’t miss out on this unforgettable adventure through time and nature!
Join NHI for a trip to Red Rock State Park to enjoy the views of iron-rich rock formations and explore the lush riparian habitat of Oak Creek. Learn about the park’s geology with geologists Jan Schultz and Jeff Meyer and explore the plant life with NHI’s Program Director, Jennie Tutone.

Jan Schultz taught geology at Santa Barbara City College for 30 years, specializing in geologic history and sedimentary geology, particularly the types of rocks found in Sedona. She taught courses such as Historical Geology and led field courses, including a two-week trip to the Colorado Plateau. After retiring to Prescott with her geologist husband, Jeff, Jan continued her passion for teaching by volunteering to lead field courses for Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California. Additionally, she served as the Project Director for a Department of Education STEM grant focused on supporting underrepresented STEM students.
Jeffrey Meyer completed his PhD research on a 24-million-year-old supervolcano, similar to Yellowstone. With 28 years of experience as a community college geology instructor, he maintained an active teaching presence, often engaging students in hands-on fieldwork. After retiring, Jeff and his wife—who is also a geologist—moved to Prescott, Arizona, into a home built by her parents. He continues to share his passion for geology as a part-time instructor at Prescott College. Jeff has dedicated significant time to studying the geology of the Grand Canyon—the top few layers in the Grand Canyon make up the cliffs of Sedona!
