Paying attention means casting off the blinders of bias and really looking with fresh eyes. The Sonoran Mountain Kingsnake has suffered from its resemblance to a Coral Snake (unreasonable fear) and its attractiveness to reptile collectors (unreasonable “love”). I choose to depict this snake as if caught in the middle—not straight as if fleeing and not coiled as in defense. The sinuous curves are as beautiful to me as the intricate patterning. Painting so small in watercolor was itself a challenge, but I feel the outcome shows my respect and admiration for this incredible creature.
