Polar Bears Hunting in Devil’s Cornfield (Death Valley)

Polar bears are the iconic species representing the suffering and torment from our warming planet. As the sea ice melts, they are being forced to carve out a new life on the land with unfamiliar dangers and starvation. Rising sea temperatures are directly related to man-made greenhouse emissions. This polar bear family finds itself in strange desert landscape surrounded by Joshua trees and long shadows while trying to hunt for seal and salmon. One can ponder if these bears are lost in a future landscape or are spirits of an extinct species. As I paint portraits of nature and animals, sitting on the ground, both brush and knife help craft thick textures of build-up acrylic paint with bright color and deep shadow.
